Composting of Pig Manure with Agricultural Wastes in Northern Thailand

SUMMARY:
The composting of pig manure mixed with soy hull in the mixture ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1 (dry weight basis) were studied. The experiments were conducted in perforated plywood composting boxes with total 120 days of the experimental period.

During composting period, the mixtures within composting boxes were turned over and water was added. The optimal time regarding temperature and C/N ratio of composting for mixture ratios of 1:1 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1 were 41, 41, 44, and 46 days, respectively. The optimal moisture content range was between 40 and 60 %. The carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N ratio) were 10.5, 9.8, 10.5, and 7.1 and the electrical conductivity (EC) were 4.25, 3.25, 3.99, and 3.23 mS/cm of the composts with mixture ratios of 1:1 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1, respectively. The cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of the composts in all mixture ratios was in the range of 84.7-106.5 meq/100 g dry weight. The tendency of physical and chemical characteristics including temperature, pH, C/N ratio, CEC, and EC of the composts from all mixture ratios were similar. While the size distributions of the compost materials were represented as normal distribution and these composts could be classified as the well composting. The pathogenic microorganisms were not found in all compost materials. Regard to the acceptable quality of the composts standard by Land Development Department and Thai Industrial, the composts of all mixture ratios could be identified to be the good compost. However, in waste management aspect, composting of pig manure mixed with soy hull in the mixture ratio of 5:1 was the most effective ratio.
