Biogas production from agricultural wastes and animal by-products containing high amounts of organic nitrogen

For manure and renewable substrates thermophilic fermentation is favourable due to shorter hydraulic retention times and hygienic aspects. Using substrates with a high content of organic nitrogen, such as poultry excrements, the fermentation process may be problematic, because of the high ammonium concentration produced during the anaerobic degradation. Furthermore, due to the BSE-crisis, new economical and ecological solutions for the treatment of animal by-products are required.

The established production of animal meal and animal fat in the existing rendering plants with the subsequent incineration of these products is uneconomic. The alternative recycling concept is based on the process of Thermal Pressure Hydrolysis (TPH) including an anaerobic digestion. The process of TPH results in a splitting of the organic polymers by hydrolysis at higher pressure and temperatures in a special reactor with the guarantee of a complete disinfection. The TPH-Process allows an energy recovery from animal by-products. Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, co-digestion

In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.

Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
