Use of Ripened Dredged Material as Substrate for Landfill Recultivation

Since 16 years some landfills in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were reclaimed with treated and aged dredged material. This reclamation substrate comes from the dredging-processes to maintain water depths in the port of Rostock.

The dredged material is treated (dewatered) and classified in an industrial treatment and disposal facility (IAA). Conventional spoil fields were converted into an IAA, where the dredged material is fractionated in a longitudinal fractionating process by flow in coarse and fine materials. After sorting, gravel and sand are immediately ready for use. The finer silt substrates are removed when dry enough for digging and heaped up to form mounds. Natural dewatering, aeration, and biological processes transform the silt into soil material with exceptionally good properties. These silty soils are used for a variety of uses. The advantages of this silt material are its outstanding capacity to store nutrients and water and its excellent soil structure. It is used in gardening and landscaping, for the recultivation of old industrial sites and landfills, and will, in future, also be used in agriculture.
