Recycling and Incineration - Two Sides of the Same Coin

The Waste Framework Directive stipulates the priorities for the design of the future full recycling economy: waste prevention - preparation for reuse - recycling - other recovery - disposal.

Recycling is of high priority, nevertheless ecological and economical limitations have to be observed.
Recycling and incineration are not in competition with each other. Both procedures complement each other and are indispensable for ecological and economical waste management.
- Demands towards the full recycling economy:
the procedures of waste treatment - material and energy recovery as well as thermal residual waste treatment - are components of homogeneous waste management systems and therefore already have to be coordinated with each other at the planning stage and
- organic pollutants have to be destroyed and inorganic pollutants have to be ejected and stored safely away from the biosphere.
Residual waste can be pre-treated in mechanical-biological waste treatment plants. By way of this procedure, incineration is not avoided, but merely moved by one procedural step. On average around 60 % of what is put into mechanical-biological waste treatment plants ends up in incineration.
Incineration is the most developed residual waste treatment procedure. The plants are environmentally friendly power plants and represent the ideal combination of waste treatment and supply.
