In 18 out of 46 MBTs in Germany biological treatment of organic-containing fine fractions takes place with the aim of achieving the deposition criteria exclusively through aerobic rotting. Thus energy potentials contained in the fine fractions are not utilized.
Within the context of a study for the German Federal Environment Agency it was examined to what extent the energy and resource efficiency of these plants can be considerably improved by fitting rotting MBTs with anaerobic digestion (AD). As potential quantities approx. 1.0 million tonnes of fine fraction are available annually in the 18 rotting MBTs. Technical implementation of an AD stage, investment costs for retrofitting and effects on treatment costs of MBT are presented. It is shown that integration of an AD stage using best available techniques is accompanied by improvements in energy efficiency and climate balance. Based on the calculated data, macroeconomic effects are estimated, expressed as costs for CO2 reduction.

In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
