The shear strength in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, unlike soil material, is caused not only by friction between grains but also largely by something similar to that of reinforcing fibre and sheet materials, which form the fibrous matrix. These fibrous components may contribute to increased cohesion intercept or strength, as occurs in reinforced soil. The effects of the load capacity of solid waste are visible, for some time now and confirmed in the actual landfills by, for example, high strength and slope stability and MSW mass, although they undergo high levels of deformation. This shows that the classic theories of soil mechanics are not enough to clarify and assess the mechanical phenomena that occur in this kind of material.
The mechanical biological treatment (MBT) of waste changes fundamentally the physical behaviour of the waste to be deposed on landfills. In order to assess the mechanical behaviour and determine the strength parameters direct shear tests were performed on MBT waste samples. In this context it was also possible to analyse the strength of fibre-less material and material with a quantity of fibres other than its usual composition. This paper discusses the results of a laboratory study on solid waste from a MBT plant in Germany.
