CH4-oxidation for reducing gas emissions at in-situ aerated landfills

By applying In-Situ aeration at old municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills an efficient reduction
of the existing emission potential can be achieved. Because of low methane concentration and the resulting low calorific value it is not possible to treat the arising gas emissions in a common way. A feasible method is given by the microbial methane oxidation occurring in bio-filters. However, bio-filters in compact design have a limited
capacity. Top covers that enhance methane oxidation (biocovers) provide a simple and economic way to mitigate these greenhouse active gas emissions from In-Situ aerated MSW landfills.

The aim of the presented study was to prove the suitability and efficiency of two different materials applied as a filter component in such top covers for treating high gas fluxes with low methane concentration.
Laboratory tests show that in spite of high gas-flux rates and the resulting low contact time of the gas with the filter material the methane supply was completely removed in sewage sludge compost.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
