With the German “ElektroG“ (a law concerning the handling and recycling of electronic refuse) coming into force in Germany on March 16, 2005, quotas are set for recycling of old electronic equipment.
These can only be met if recycling also includes the plastics contained in these appliances. A reliable, automatic identification of the various kinds of synthetic materials is a prerequisite for later material recycling. Therefore, a comprehensive study shows the expected amounts of old appliances in the five statutory categories, and we estimate the resulting sorts and quantities of plastics therein. For refuse groups 3 and 5 there is still need for action concerning the recycling of plastics. Particularly the synthetics of group 3 are estimated to be highly polluted by flame-retardants.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
