The Occupants as Experts – Waste Separation at Large Apartment Buildings

A significant amount of recyclable material is still lost through residual waste.

Especially unsatisfying is the waste separation at large apartment buildings. Here, great efforts must be put on an increase of valuable yield. The Bavarian Institute of Applied Environmental Research and Technology (BIfA GmbH) worked on a project to improve waste separation behaviour at large apartment buildings. Central approach was the realization, that the occupants of large apartment buildings are not only the main players but also are the best experts for the on-site situation. Together with the occupants of two building complexes the situation was analysed, and measures for improved waste separation were developed and implemented. The success was measured by quarterly waste separation analyses and by interviewing the occupants.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
