Low tech options for pelletising of poultry manure in South East Asia

SUMMARY:
Due to the increasing wealth in the emerging countries of South East Asia the demand for poultry products is constantly rising. In correlation the waste production of this sector is growing.

chicken manure, agglomeration, pellet

The common methods of chicken manure disposal lead to hygienic and environmental problems as well as odour nuisance. But chicken manure is also a quality fertilizer with a high nutrient content, which is applied in agriculture. The existing treatment technologies in the developed countries mostly exceed the financial possibilities of most of the poultry farmers in South East Asia. Therefore the Institute of Waste Resources Management of Hamburg University of Technology is developing a “low tech” method to produce a valuable fertilizer, which enables an easy storage and transportation as well as manual and mechanical spreading. Manure is transformed into pellets by an agglomeration process in a rotating drum. By adjusting the parameters moisture content and rotation speed, ballshaped agglomerates smaller than 20 mm were produced within 30 minutes. By adjusting the angle of the drum a classing of the agglomerates can be achieved. The products were analysed for their nutrient content. The work was carried out in frame of the ASIA-PRO-ECO project “CHIMATRA”, financed by the European Union and the City of Hamburg.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
