Contribution of lignin towards the build up of humic substances – A new strategy for marketable high quality composts

SUMMARY:
Co-composting represents an opportune technology for use in the processing of biogenic waste materials. During composting the presence of humic substances is incremented. In view of the environmental benefits afforded by carbon sequestration and its positive effects on soil and plants humification represents a highly desirable target.

Lignin is a known precursor of humic substances; thus, co-composting of lignin with biogenous waste materials should result in a synergistic effect to promote and increase humification. Lab-scale experiments were carried out to show synergistic effects of microbiologically degraded wood and industrial lignins from different origins. The results obtained show that the addition of an industrial lignin by-product leads to higher humic acid contents in composts. Microbiologically degraded wood did not show any synergistic effect. Quality control of humic acids was carried out using FT-IR spectroscopy to prove that lignin was integrated into the humic acid molecule.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
