Biological Oxidation of Poor Landfill Gas in Aerated Biofilter Systems with High Input Concentration

SUMMARY:
In the long-term, landfills are producing landfill gas (LFG) with low calorific values. Therefore, the utilization of LFG in combined heat and power plants (CHP) is limited to a certain period of time. A feasible method for LFG treatment is the microbial CH4 oxidation.

Lab-scale tests with active aerated biofilter were carried out with technical and real LFG to receive parameters for the design of a pilot biofilter system. This paper describes main results from a test carried out onsite a landfill. Poor LFG with a average CH4-content of about 31% was fed into the testing setup. For more than one year the gas flows, temperatures and degradation rates at increasing filter loads were observed. After 190 operation days the depletion of hazardous minor gas components inside the filter was investigated.
