SUMMARY:
Quality assurance systems are a proper way to establish high quality standards. The quality label for members of the Austrian Compost Quality Society (KGVÖ) shows consumers as well as government that the operater of the plant does his best for optimal conditions in the plant and best compost quality. Practice in Austria shows that nearly every type of composting, based on appropriate inputmaterials, can fulfill high quality requirements.
Austrian households produce ˜ 3 mio t/a waste including ˜ 0,5 mio t/a biowaste as basis for the production of ˜ 150.000 t/a compost. Addiditonal amounts of compost are produced from organic residues from agriculture and industry. The aim of composting is to obtain soil-improvers and substrate-components for agricultrure, private gardens and horticulture. Organic substance is “the” energy-source for soil-organisms and delivers nutrients and trace elements as long term source. Prior condition for the use of compost is guaranteed high quality which can be trusted by the users. There are many organisations and examples in EU member-states who have compareable experiance with QAS-systems. To harmonize conditions in the EU, ECN-WG 2 “Standardisation/QAS” works on apporaches for European Quality Assurance (QA).
