This paper describes how organisations from Europe and South Africa have formed a partnership for sustainable development in the field of waste management. A case study in health care waste and a general model for international collaboration are introduced.
The study revealed that the following points are critical for establishing effective international partnerships to support the achievement of sustainable development:
• Recognise and understand the sustainable development strategy of the host country
• People solve problems and technology is a tool people use to help solve problems
• Sufficient time and financial resources must be available to allow for a cultural and technical dialogue to mature sufficiently to build trust
• Broad partnerships including Government, NGOs, educational institutions, businesses and communities must be assembled to work on specific projects Keywords: Capacity Building, South Africa, Health Care Waste

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
