Horizontal gas collectors were designed to replace vertical extraction wells for capturing landfill gas (LFG) from a sanitary landfill in Thailand after the vertical extraction wells became flooded.
Six collectors with a total length of 580 meters were installed. Pumping tests have been performed for a period of two years. Results showed that gas production was 0.7 m3/hr per meter length of collector. First-order decay model was used to estimate LFG generation. Time constant, methane generation potential, and overall collection efficiency were selected based on landfill conditions and waste composition. The model gave satisfactory estimation of the LFG generation. The designed horizontal gas collectors have been adopted in two pilot landfill gas-to-energy projects in Thailand.
