Pilot plant investigations into the anaerobic degradability and drainability of sewage sludge using selected substrates

Several co-substrates were examined in a pilot plant to test their suitability for application in a sewage sludge digester.

Three different substrates (food leftovers, grease trap wastes and flotation sludge) were fermented together with sewage sludge in four digesters having volumes of 0.5 to 1 m3. The fourth line was fed with sewage sludge for the purpose of comparison only. Mixtures having various proportions of substrate to sewage sludge were examined. The proportion of substrates was gradually increased. Without exception, the degradability of substrate mixtures was much higher than that of pure sewage sludge. Results showed that degradability of more than 80 % of the co-substrate could be obtained. The increase in gas production was extremely high, with the maximum percent increase peaking at 500 %. Sludge stabilization was not affected by the three co-substrates investigated. Following sludge digestion, the drainability of the fermented sludge materials was tested in order to predict drainage behavior. Additionally, wastewater parameters were measured to estimate the wastewater treatment plant back load. The drainability of the anaerobic sludge decreased slightly in all three co-fermentation lines.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
