Stability of landfills is one of the major geotechnical tasks in landfill design and operation. The knowledge about waste mechanics has significantly improved over the last decade. In Germany several large research projects have been conducted. In 1997, German Geotechnical Society released a technical recommendation reflecting the state of art in stability analysis. However, there are still open questions particularly about the influence of regional parameters such as tropical climate conditions, but also about variations in landfill operation and waste composition.
Several heavy landslide events occurred in countries all over the world during the last years. A tragic case was reported from the Philippines, when hundreds died in the Payatas landslide in July 2000 (Kölsch, Ziehmann, 2004). In March 2003 a landfill collapsed in Athens (Greece). The most recent landfill failure happened close to Bandung (Indonesia) in February 2005. Regarding the number of casualties and the volume of waste, it was the heaviest failure, which ever hit a dumpsite. The following article presents the results of the forensic analysis. It was one special task of the analytic work to check whether German advanced calculation models for landfill stability covers those cases and whether they reflect the stability correctly.

Die innerstaatliche Umsetzung des Pariser Klimaschutzübereinkommens

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
