Soils as Witnesses of Natural and Anthropogenic Processes

Subject of this paper is the development of petrogenese since Late Glacial as it is influenced by substratum and groundwater dynamics. The development of soils is documented by sequences of horizons and controlled by geological and landscape forming processes.

Often these landscape forming processes are results of climatic events, which are also shown in the sequence of horizons. The combination of pedogenic factors and their interaction leads to consequences for the soil function as archives for nature and cultural history as well as for practical questions. Protection of these archives as well as damage avoidance of these and other soil functions is subject of federal and state soil protection laws. This requires basic information given by soil mapping.
