The water balance and the efficiency of landfill surface sealing systems may be studied on a 1:1 scale using large-scale lysimeter test-fields.
Two examples of large-scale lysimeters are presented, where Calcium-GCL as barrier layers came under scrutiny. In the test-field at "Im Dienstfeld"-landfill (Bavaria) some 0.9% of the total precipitation during the 4-years observation perion seeped through the Ca-GCL. In the test-field at "Mengersgereuth-Hämmern" (Thuringia) seepage through the Ca-GCL amounted to only 0.5% of precipitation. These long-term observations help verifying the suitability of Ca-GCL as sealing element in landfill surface sealing systems.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
