The Royal Dutch/Shell Group shares the widespread concern that the emission of greenhouse gases from human activities is leading to changes in the global climate.
Shell for its part is taking action on climate change now and is supporting the use of flexible, market oriented instruments like emissions trading. The article shows which action Shell is taking and the way climate change is integrated into its business strategies and policies. In particular, it gives the view of a multinational company on the present preparations for the introduction of the EU’s emission trading scheme in its most important EU markets.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
