Sustainability & Circular Economy at voestalpine High Performance Metals Division

Sustainability is a focus topic in the High Performance Metals (HPM) Division of the voestalpine group. Within inSPire, our sustainability framework, we are setting goals for sustainable production and reducing our carbon footprints. Circular economy is an important divisional strategic field for two years now and deals with 4 fields of action: Alternative raw material sources, Recycling of by-products, Material & scrap cycles and Zero waste. Two challenges concerning the recycling of by-products are presented in this article to show the difficulties we face when we want to recover alloy elements from our production wastes: EAF-dusts and scales. Valuable elements are lost by landfill or downcycling. Finding solutions for these challenges is part of our focus on Circular Economy in the High Performance Metals Division.

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE HIGH PERFORMANCE METALS DIVISION: inSPire
The High Performance Metals Division of voestalpine (HPM) has taken responsibility for the important topic of sustainability for many years. We have set ourselves the goal of supplying our customers with the highest performance while taking an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach. We follow the saying of Gro Harlem Brundtland: 'Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs†(World Commission on Environment and Development 1987). To cover ongoing and future activities, we developed the sustainability platform and the framework inspire. This includes all sustainability related activities and efforts in our division. Our Mission: 'As the world‘s leading supplier of high performance materials with a unique service network that ensures customers confidence, we establish sustainable performance beyond expectations for our planet and generations to come. With our integration of products, services and technical advisory we create a profound impact on our business area. Leading by example, we enable our customers to engage in sustainable initiatives while also driving our suppliers and partners to be at the cutting edge of essential transformation processes for tomorrow. Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
