Adaptive Sorting of Plastic Granulates

Recycling polymers are sought-after cost-efficient replacements for virgin polymers. Especially polypropylene (PP) due to its properties is a highly desired raw material in colorfast applications.

To produce colorfast recycled PP granulate the processing chain has to ensure that the highly variable color distribution of the feedstock (e.g. leightweight packaging) is stabalized to a target value which is dictated by the customer. This is currently done batch-wise by fixed color sorting unaware of the target color value to meet and therefore costly over-dying. The approach presented can cope with the high variability in color distribution by identifying particles violating the target color. The approach is evaluated through simulations based on real world data.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
