Ways for increased material recycling of material flows from MBT

By implementing modern thermal and non-thermal waste treatment technologies, waste management hast made a big leap forward. In the last two decades, Central Europe has been the motor of the development. The first decade of this century has been a period of development and installation of new processes in numerous locations. This was followed by nearly a decade of minor progress. This article will analyse the current situation and show how higher recycling rates even from mixed and residual waste can be achieved.

MBT was able to significantly improve waste management by minimising rates of landfill diversion and incineration and reducing greenhouse emissions. Incineration reaches only a low grade in the waste hierarchy and destroys valuable materials and therefore should to be avoided. Current widespread MBT plants recover energy, but achieve only low recycling rates. These plants can be vastly improved by integration of up to date wet mechanical separation steps and sensor based sorting devices. The progress in MBT technology technically facilitates previously unimagined recycling levels.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
