Already at an early stage of biofuels development and production it became obvious, that a potential competition to food and feed production could occur, supported by a number a potential studies and systems analysis. Based on their results a concept was derived for the use of the vast amounts of low grade, residual biomass for use in large scale synthetic biofuels production.
Ten years ago, the bioliq project was launched to demonstrate the production of synthetic biofuels from residual biomass and to provide a research platform. The bioliq process aims at the conversion of low grade residual biomass into synthetic fuels and chemicals. Central element of the bioliq project is the 2-5 MW pilot plant along the complete process chain: fast pyrolysis for pre-treatment of biomass to obtain an energy dense, liquid intermediate fuel, high pressure entrained flow gasification providing low methane syntheses gas free of tar, hot gas cleaning to separated sour gases and contaminants as well as methanol/dimethylether and subsequent following gasoline synthesis. After construction and commissioning of the individual process steps with partners from industry, first production of synthetic fuel was achieved in 2014. In addition to pilot plant operation for technology demonstration, a research and development network has been established as a scientific fundament for optimization, further development of the bioliq® process, and to explore new applications of the technologies and products involved.

Rechtliche und praktische Unsicherheiten bei der Durchführung des europäischen Klimaanpassungsrechts durch das Bundes- Klimaanpassungsgesetz (KAnG)
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
