Microwave-Assisted Organsolv-Pretreatment of Biological Residues

Due to the scarcity of arable land and the competition with food production, lignocellulosic residues, such as straw come into the focus of the considerations of biofuel production. Lignocellulosic residues are not suitable for direct use in conversion processes, such as bioethanol production. The reason is their plant physiological composition.

A pretreatment step withthe purpose of increasing the specific surface area, a decrease of lignin content and a decrease of cellulose crystallinity, is therefore an overriding process step before the main saccharification and enzymatic implementation. One approach is the use of organic solvents, for example with ethanol. With the present work, a method with using of microwave-assisted heating will be described. Microwave-assisted reactions can partially run with a drastically increased rate, increase the yields and provide clearer response gradients.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
