Removal of H2S from Biogas with the Use of Ashes

In 2007, the Institute of Waste Management, Vienna, proposed a rather simple static system for removal of CO2 and H2S from biogas or landfill gas (LFG). Aged MSWI bottom ash was used as a 'filter medium†at that time (BABIU process). The publications available today about ash-based upgrading of biogas concentrate on CO2 removal, CH4 enrichment and ecological benefits of the process. Less attention has been paid to reactions of H2S with ash constituents.

The present paper summarizes the results of several unpublished industrial studies, the LIFE+study 'UPGAS-LOWCO2†(2010-2012) and intermediate outcomes of the on going research Project 'BioGAP†with regard to H2S removal from biogas/LFG. A wide variety of ashes (fresh MSWI bottom ash, weathered upgraded MSWI bottom ash, wood ashes) was tested at a laboratory scale and/or pilot scale with regard to removal of CO2 and H2S from biogas/LFG. In total, 20 tests were performed at a laboratory scale (25 to 80 kg of ash per test), and five at a pilot scale (1 t of ash per test). In laboratory, the H2S content of the synthetic input gas ranged from 237 ppm H2S to 650 ppm H2S. During the pilot scale tests, real landfill gas was pumped into the ash, containing approx. 80 to 120 ppm of H2S. All tests were performed at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Some temperature increase (ΔT = approx. 15 to 40 oC) was accomplished by thermal insulation of the ash and the heat of the carbonation reaction.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
