Investigated for the First Time: The Recycling Chain of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment in an Entire German State

1,730,794t of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) were brought on the German market in 2010. 722,567t of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) were collected from private households but only about 1.1% of those were reused.

In order to establish quality recycling and reuse of WEEE, all players along the chain need to be taken into account. In order to effectively govern the recycling chain, the Ministry of Commerce, Climate Protection, Energy and Regional Planning commissioned a study to map the ways of the WEEE in Rhineland-Palatinate (RP) in a 'practical review†of the situation. The study was carried out in three work packages (WP). During WP1 municipalities in RP were questioned. WP2 focused on producers and distributors of(EEE) as well as on repair and second hand shops. WP3 dealt with treatments plants for WEEE. The main results of the WPs are described in the following paragraphs.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
