Eco-Efficiency Potential for Anaerobic Digestion and Composting of Biowaste

This study conducted by the bifa Environmental Institute on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection, focuses on the analysis of the eco-effi cieny potentials of composting and fermentation of biowaste.

When considering a good practice of fermentation and composting the environmental differences between these treatment options are very limited. Both fermentation as well as composting have the potential to significantly reduce environmental effects through the implementation of appropriate measures. In the fermentation process, the environmental impact can be decreased primarily through the establishment of technical solutions for emissions reduction, as well as the expansion of externaluse of heat generated from biogas. A decrease of the environmental burden from composting plants is mainly achieved through optimized management of the composting process and the expanded use the compost as a substitute for peat.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
