Evaluating Recyclability and Resource Potential of Deconstructing Notebook Computers

Recovering raw materials that are critical in supply from electronic devices requires the dismantling of these devices in order be able to effi ciently recycle the parts that contain the raw materials of interest. In this regard, especially circuit boards, hard drives and battery packs need to be considered. The feasibility of such deconstructions was evaluated by considering three Notebook computers (subsequently: 'notebooksâ€) built in 2004, 2007 and 2010.

All three devices were easily disassembled - neither mechanical support nor the use of force was required. Subsequently, the content of technological components was recorded and the content of technological metals and elements was determined. The Raw Material Index shows that the resource efficiency - expressedas the usage of elements in critical supply - has been increasing with technological advancements of the respective device/ by the respective manufacturer.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
