In-Depth Characterization of Residual Fines by Digital Image Processing

During processing of solid waste for the recovery of valuable materials certain residual fractions are inevitably created. This study examines fi ne-grained post shredder sorting residue (PSSR) originating form of shredder heavy fraction (SHF) < 2 mm in detail. Digital Image recording and processing using a digital light microscope 'VHX-2000D†was performed. Data sets consisting of particle size, particle shape and material type information were collected and transferred into a database. A total of 2,881 individual particles were analyzed in bands of 1-2 mm, 0.5-1 mm and 0.25-0.5 mm.

During the processing of solid waste for the recovery of valuable materials certain residual fractions are inevitably created. As a rule, these cannot be processed at state-of-the-art solid waste processing technology for economic reasons and for quality restraints. Thus, any contained valuable materials are largely lost for the economic cycle or removed for the long-term by incineration or landfilling. The more complex mixtures of solid waste from anthropogenic utilization grow, the greater the proportion of residue fractions after processing. In particular, fine-grained material send up in such residual fractions. In order to seize any potential of valuable materials from fine-grained residual fractions, processing depth must be increased. Where state-of-the-art modes of operation of conventional processing technology reach their limitations due to declining efficiencies and shifting proportions of mechanical forces, detailed knowledge of material characteristics is needed to deduct appropriate processing conditions. Various metal-containing fine-grained residue fractions arise from commercial and industrial solid waste processing. These include both mass metals such as aluminum and copper, but also high-tech and critical metals and an array of other substances. Metals are present in the form of individual particles, as alloying components or in composites. Conventional material characterization in the form of technical examination with magnetic or eddy-current separators amounts to bulk inspection on the one hand and suffers from declining effectiveness with small particle sizes on the other hand. Laboratory methods such as glowing loss, melt analysis or leaching experiments to determine metal or inert content all remove any evidence of particle shapes and individual particle sizes. For both reasons, conventional methods are not suitable and are assisted in this paper by digital image processing.
