Combining WTE and Solar Power - New Solutions for Sustainable Energy Generation -

The transition to renewable energy production in Europe poses a significant challenge: According to EU directives, renewable energies should reach at least 20 % of final energy consumption by 2020. In order to achieve this goal, all sectors of the economy should work on the development of new integrated concepts in order to ensure a climate-friendly energy supply in the future.

How can the waste-to-energy (WTE) sector make a significant contribution in this regard? Typically, innovations in the field of enhanced heat recovery and increased efficiency of power generation are discussed. It has been demonstrated, particularly in Scandinavian countries, that important CO2 reductions are achieved with these modern combined heat and power generation plants (CHP). As a result, the waste-to-energy sector can confidently look forward to further dynamic development in northern countries.

But how can the waste sector improve its contribution to CO2 reduction in southern countries? This paper discusses innovations in connection with energy generation in concentrated solar thermal power plants (CSP). The basic idea of combining waste-to-energy plants with solar energy is not completely new: Photovoltaic modules are added to WTE plants in several locations in order to increase overall power generation. But combining CSP and WTE plants have numerous additional advantages: Combined power and heat generation (CHP) as well as seawater desalination are conceivable for these types of hybridpower plants. Especially in southern regions the sun provides an unlimited supply of free, clean energy, which can be used for repowering WTE plants.

There are different ways of implementing WTE-CSP hybrid power plants. In this paper solar tower technology is used by way of example for the CSP part. Given that the steam parameters are similar to those of a WTE plant, a concept such as this has both technical and economic advantages in comparison with separate plants.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation.
