In accordance to the Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and the Council from January 27th 2003 on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), this contribution will provide an overview of the legal framework for collection and treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. For WEEE, the manufacturers and distributors are put in charge of taking back and utilize their products.
Austrian legislation has adopted the EU-Directive in the Austrian Waste Electric and Elec-tronic Equipment Ordinance (EAG-VO 2005) which became effective on April 30th 2005. Until the end of 2006, a collection quota of 4 kg WEEE per capita for private households (Business-to-Consumer B2C) was set and accomplished. Additional recovery quotas have been set to achieve 50 % to 80 % and a periodic biennial reporting system has been established. The re-sponsibility for labeling, taking back as well as utilizing the products is in the hands of the man-ufacturers and - in case of them being unable to comply - will be accomplished by a special re-covery- and treatment system. The costs for collecting and recycling are included in the purchasing prize (Kramer 2012).
In Europe, an average B2C collection quota of 5.3 kg WEEE per capita and year is assumed, hence the aim of 4 kg per capita and year was already achieved in 2008. As of year 2016, new collection quota will become effective, which is determined by the ratio of old and new electri-cal and electronic equipment in relation to the total stock (Kramer 2012). A European citizen has an average of 362 kg WEEE at his disposal. Subdivided into the specific fractions, the main portions contain "white goods (135 kg), cooling units (63 kg), TV/HiFi equipment (86 kg) and computers (37 kg)". The anticipated average product life time is between one and up to twenty years (Friege 2012). In an European comparison, Austria comes off quite well, only the Scandi-navian countries, Ireland and Belgium could report better recycle flows. Austrian citizens col-lect more than 8.8 kg per capita and year on an average (Kramer 2012).

Bioabfälle machen 34 % der Siedlungsabfälle aus und bilden damit die größte Abfallfraktion im Siedlungsabfall in der EU. Rund 40 Millionen Tonnen Bioabfälle werden jährlich in der EU getrennt gesammelt und in ca. 4.500 Kompostierungs- und Vergärungsanlagen behandelt.

Zur Nachbehandlung von Gärrest aus Bio- und Restabfall entwickelte Eggersmann den Gärrestmischer, der aus Gärresten und Zuschlagstoffen homogene, gut belüftbare Mischungen erzeugt. Damit wird den besonderen Anforderungen der Gärreste mit hohem Wassergehalt begegnet und eine effiziente Kompostierung ermöglicht.
