Appropriate Maintenance and Monitoring of Landfill Drainage

The drainage system of a landfill is an essential part of the sealing system, in particular of the landfill base sealing. The perforated or slotted drainage pipes are embedded in the surface drainage. Materials like clay or stoneware were formerly used for pipes. PE-HD pipes are currently state-of-the-art. Leachate is collected in and conveyed via pipes to the appropriate treatment. In case of damages within this crucial part of the landfill construction, severe consequences for the stability and the sealing of the landfill and therefore for the environment can occur. As prevention, high pressure cleaning and pipe inspections in these systems are carried out. To maintain the drainage function of the pipes, changes or already existing damages in pipe walls are visually captured in order to take appropriate action for preserving the drainage function and for rehabilitation measures.

Periodic inspections of landfill drainage systems have regularly shown that consistent use of appropriate maintenance techniques, inspections and evaluations can improve operational efficiency to ensure long-term drainage of the landfill.
Especially consistent functionality maintenance of these systems presents a highly relevant task up to the aftercare phase of a landfill.
As a failure of the drainage system results in financial, technical and environmental risks, strategies for monitoring and maintenance have to be already developed during operation and decommissioning phase to minimize such risks during the aftercare phase of the landfill.
The basis for these strategies is provided by a regular and efficient use of the available techniques and subsequently, by a qualified evaluation of the monitoring results.
To reduce the cost of monitoring and maintenance of the drainage system to a minimum during the aftercare phase, appropriate short-, medium- and long-term actions have to be taken to maintain the functionality of a pipe or pipe section.
If the measures are implemented consistently and effectively, the drainage of the landfill is sustainably secured. In combination with a functional surface sealing a well maintained drainage system is sufficiently compliant with due diligence towards the environment.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation.
