Innovative Treatment of Gas Discharge Lamps and LCD Screens

Existing gas discharge treatment plants can handle either linear lamps or so-called special forms (energy saving lamps). Therefore, the focus of the project was placed on both two types of lamps and other mercury-containing electrical equipment, such as flat panel displays. The construction is based on regular proven technique with a dry-cleaning technology for glass cleaning and subsequent sorting and separation technology. The separated fractions, except the fluorescent powder, are free from harmful substances and can be shipped to recovery plants. The annu-al throughput capacity of the plant is 1,000 tons of used lamps and 1,000 tons flat screens.

Since 1993, when the first lamp regulation for the recovery and recycling of waste lamps was put into force, all fluorescent lamps and special forms (energy saving lamps) have been collected as a separate stream and recycled. This was necessary because the lamps contains mercury and therefore it is considered hazardous and disposed of as hazardous waste.
Until a few years, the proportion of straight luminiscent lamps in the collection was over 90 %, the rest were special forms. The straight lamps were treated with the technology of cut and separation process, the special forms were once a year crashed a mobile system. In recent years, the percentage of special forms rised up to over 20 % and will increase rapidly. In addition, the LED lamps are now also incorporated into the collection group of waste lamps. Thus, the amounts will increase further. Therefore Saubermacher Dienstleistung AG (SDAG) was searching for a new method for the recovery of all these types of lamps.
SDAG started a development with the company Air mercury from Switzerland and adopted their technology to the Austrian’s requirements. The plant is now working in Vienna at a Saubermacher site and is an environmental friendly and economic way to save high transport and trestment costs. The phosphor powder is in a near time also recycled for recovering the rare earth inside.
