Studies on the Explosion Behaviour of Dusts Occurring in Waste Treatment Facilities

The use of waste as a raw material is already routine in many industrial sectors. To get resource out of waste materials different ways of treatment are necessary. First steps in waste treatment facilities are controlled crushing of the input material for further separation processes. During breakup and manipulation besides the desired product size also a finest dust fraction is generated. For burnable material there is a hazard of this fine fraction to cause dust explosions.

To assure the implementation of the right safety systems the knowledge of the explosion be-haviour of the occurring dusts is necessary. On the one hand it has to be act on the assumption that the dusts in recycling plants are combustible, on the other hand the combustible dusts are mixed with coarse grained and inert particles, which embarrass the explosive properties. To specify dusts occurring in waste treatment facilities properly, the determination of safety characteristics as well as the knowledge of the impact of the influencing factors is needed. Further-more it is desirable to attribute explosion characteristics to physical dust properties as detailed, that it is possible to predict the explosion behaviour of dusts just because of specific properties.
For the identification of the explosion hazard as well as for the comparison of explosion behaviour of dusts from different waste treatment facilities experimental investigations to identify the influencing factors were done. Different waste treatment facilities all over Austria got sam-pled for dust deposited on the facility components and filter dust of exhaust systems. It had to be proofed if the explosion behaviour of dust samples in one plant varies with time and how explosion behaviour changes within one plant after several treatment units. After these investigations a comparison of the explosion behaviour of the different waste treatment plants followed with respect of the physical properties of the different dust samples and the processing steps they run through.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task.
