Raw Material Index (RMI) - An Index to Characterize the Content of Raw Materials in Different Products

Complex products like cell phones offer many different ingredients, mostly metals, in varying concentrations. Usually these ingredients are limited raw materials and the scarcity of these resources worsens. As a consequence the use of raw materials has to become more carefully. The biggest problem is that it is impossible to compare the rareness.

The Raw Material Index (RMI) could be a solution of this problem. It combines the concentration of the containing metals with the element-specific rareness. The sum of the individual data adds up to the RMI. In this context the value of rareness is comparable to the criticality, which considers different indicators and which is already used in Germany.
The presented examples of different cell phones illustrate the approach and the significance.
It is also possible to use the RMI for the evaluation of recycling rates and recycling depths.

Die innerstaatliche Umsetzung des Pariser Klimaschutzübereinkommens - ein Rechtsvergleich

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
