Pre-Treatment of Organic Wastes for Wet Digestion Systems - Technology of Komptech

This paper describes how to maximize the methane yield for the wet digestion process and remove impurities from the input material by use of a pre-treatment technology. Komptech is a leading international technology supplier for machines and systems for the mechanical and biological treatment of waste and biomass as a renewable energy source. Seven aims for the pre-treatment of organic wastes to a digestion liquid are described. They can be succeeded by a combination of a shredder, a pulper, a starscreen, a press, a sand trap and a post-shredder. This system is called Pulper Process. The importance of each step is described. The Press Process is shown as an alternative to the Pulper Process.

During a digestion process organic wastes are transformed to methane. The maximising of the methane yield and the removal of contraries for the process of wet digestion by a suitable preparation technology are presented in this paper.
Organic wastes are raw material for the production of humus, fertilisers and renewable energy carrier. The last two are generated by anaerobic digestion thus the application of the process means a material and energetic utilisation of the raw material biowaste. In a composting process on the other hand is proceeding only a material utilisation in form of humus and fertilizers.
The energy density of biowaste from households as a main fraction of organic wastes with 3-7 MJ/kg (Hu) must be looked upon as low. All the more significant is the relevance of the generation of methane with 50 MJ/kg (ca. 30 MJ/kg biogas) as a highgrade energy carrier during digestion. Methane is directly available for various final applications.
At the composting process this energy potential will be released in form of heat which has not been used so far commercially. At incineration this energy potential is partly used for the evaporation of the remaining water in biowaste. With incineration the potential of the raw material for the production of humus and fertilizer will not be realised so this is the treatment option is the one with the worst performance. Humus as soil improver delivers on account of its long-term carbon accumulation in soil a contribution to the mitigation against climate change (CO2 sink). Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task.
