Pharmaceutical Waste Management in Ghana − Consequences and interventions

Pharmaceuticals are essential to the delivery of health care in any given population or country. They cut across all major areas of health care delivery and their absence or inadequate supply has always led to loss of confidence in the health care system (MOH, 2004a). The main goal of this research project is to assess the system of managing waste from pharmaceuticals in hospitals and homes in Ghana.

Drugs are useful in promoting health and preventing and managing diseases, however, they can be harmful when used and disposed inappropriately. Also, good pharmaceuticals management can save money and less outdated drugs can save the production of more new ones and avoid waste. Every year, millions of prescription and non prescription drugs enters the environment through direct and indirect pathways. These products are released not only after usage but also during manufacturing. The inappropriate use and disposal of drugs have medical, environmental and social implications in the community. Wastes from pharmaceuticals require different handling and disposal technologies in health care institutions. This is due to the fact that health care waste is considered the second most hazardous waste after radioactive waste according to the United Nation listing, (Basel Convention,
1992).

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
