Interview: Membrane technology under discussion

The Institutes for Environmental Engineering (ISA) and for Chemical Process Engineering (AVT) of RWTH Aachen University together with the International Water Association (IWA) this year arrange the 6th IWA Specialist Conference on Membrane Technology for Water & Wastewater Treatment, an international forum for experts with about 140 lectures on the current status of research and development in membrane technology, Prof. Dr. Johannes Pinnekamp, director of the ISA, and Christine Ziegler of gwf-Wasser|Abwasser talked about the orientation and significance of the event and the major applications of membrane technology in the field of water and wastewater treatment.

gwf: In the meantime, the membrane symposia in Aachen have well established in the agenda of the water professionals. What makes the conference so special this year?
Prof. Pinnekamp: We arrange this conference on membrane technology for many years now as a joint conference of the Institute for Environmental Engineering (ISA) and the Institute for Chemical Process Engineering (AVT) here at the RWTH Aachen. Prof. Robert Rautenbach, who sadly already passed away, and Prof. Max Dohmann have started this series. In the meantime Prof. Thomas Melin and Prof. Matthias Wessling from the AVT and I have taken over responsibility for this task. Since the beginning of the series, eight conferences have already been held, but only at a national scale. However, it soon become clear that this topic also has international relevance and, therefore, we gradually increased the proportion of lectures in English language. The next step towards a more international presentation was undertaken two years ago at the conference of the International Water Association (IWA) in Beijing: the candidature for the follow-up event in 2011. Indeed, not as elaborate as for a candidature for the Olympic Games, but yet with a wellfi lled application fi le containing information about event, city of Aachen, RWTH Aachen and hotel capacity. Finally, the RWTH Aachen was successful in Beijing and has been elected.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
