The Strategy and goals of waste management in Switzerland

In industrialized countries, the consumption of goods and products such as food, clothes, electrical and electronic appliances, cars and construction materials has grown to very high levels in recent decades, with a concomitant rise in packaging in most of these cases. All products become waste, some very quickly, others after longer periods of time. Most packaging has to be treated as waste soon after the contents are consumed, and newspapers and leaflets are usually used for only a few days before they are disposed of.

The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
