Environmental assessment tool for building’s materials and components: Applications to insulation

An assessment tool developed by (Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering (LHTEE) is presented in this paper, aiming at becoming an attractive tool for the implementation of the strategy towards increasing energy efficiency and accomplishing a comprehensive evaluation of existing residential buildings.

The assessment tool’s results can be translated into a simple environmental rating system, in order to enable less specialized users to make meaningful comparisons between materials and building components. An A, B, C scale of ranking is used to assist decision making process. The user can design integrated building components, by selecting different construction materials. The assessment tool is applied for the integrated evaluation of representative external wall insulation solutions as they are used throughout Europe, like the double cavity wall and the external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS).

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
