Assessing the sustainability of waste-derived biofuels in Greece

This paper provides an updated insight on how Greece currently deals with the challenge of integrating biofuels in its national energy mix; initially, it summarizes country specific conditions regarding the promotion of first generation biofuels’ and the challenge of second generation biofuels; main parameters affecting the development of biofuel market are reviewed and analyzed.

Potential and opportunities regarding the cultivation of new energy crops are discussed; biofuel production and distribution units are reviewed and issues regarding the absorption of the domestic biofuel production are examined. Next, the required background information on waste feedstock availability to cope with the emerging second generation biofuels technology and market demand is provided. The sustainability of the biodiesel currently produced in Greece is also addressed with results indicating CO2 savings of 45-65% compared to regular diesel fuel.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
