Effects of influent composition on activated sludge protozoa

The properties of activated sludge protistan community in two sequential batch reactors were examined in this work, operating with activated sludge (SBR) and with activated sludge and plastic biofilm carriers (SBBR), and certain characteristics were evaluated such as the species present, the corresponding biovolumes and their statistical importance to the treatment efficiency.

The biofilm reactor system supported an increased protozoan biodiversity and abundance of sessile species, due to the greater surface area, and to the development of integrated food webs on the surface of the biofilm material. The variation of organic load might initiate a competition between bacteria and protozoa for carbon resources affecting the removal efficiency of the wastewater treatment unit. Statistical analysis revealed that protozoan species observations represented important indicators for the determination of trophic relations in the activated sludge and they might comprise appropriate precursors for the prediction of effluent quality.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
