Natural or artificial Christmas tree: a case study from Greece

The aim of the present paper is to study natural and artificial Christmas trees utilising the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. We considered a fir plantation in Taxiarchis, Chalkidiki as the place of production for the former and a factory in China for the latter. For both cases, the final location of use was considered to be Athens, Greece. The functional unit was defined as a tree of Colorado type 2 m in height. Data for the inventory phase were collected from personal communication with natural tree growers while data for the artificial tree were collected from technical equations and electronic sources. The assessment indicates that the natural tree is environmentally preferable than the artificial one.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
