Sustainable mobility and transport modeling: the case of the city of Giannitsa

Within the framework of this paper, the traffic, environmental and energy impact of transport demand management (TDM) strategies introduced in urban central areas in order to promote sustainable mobility is examined and evaluated through the use of traffic simulation modeling techniques.

The results of the examination of various indicators such as average speed, delays, travel time, travel distance, energy consumption and pollutants emitted (CO, CO2, NOx, HC, and Pb) through the use of a simulation model are presented and discussed. The case study of the research refer to the city of Giannitsa, Northern Greece, which is representative of medium sized cities, all facing similar environmental and traffic problems. Therefore, the results and the evaluation methodology that was followed in this research are of general interest and applicability, especially in cases where the overall aim of sustainable mobility must be secured.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
