Hydrodechlorination of PCBs-contaminated soils and groundwaters

As in most South American countries, the magnitude of the Chilean contaminated site problem is yet to be established. To date, only two studies have been conducted for the identification and preliminary risk assessment of sites under suspicion of contamination, considering the associated human health and environmental risks. The latter work is a case study in an industrial Region in South Central Chile, the second most important in social and economic terms.

Persistent organic pollutants stand as a significant concern for being a source of pollution in the atmosphere, soils and aquifers. Conventional groundwater treatment methods, e.g. based on sorption onto granular activated carbon, are in many cases not very effective, in particular for PCBs, which are characterized by their low vapor pressures, high affinity to organic matter and low solubility in water. After a thorough revision of the scientific literature concerning remediation of sites contaminated with organochlorinated compounds, it has been stated that the remediation of industrial sites contaminated with PCBs is possible to be achieved upon the utilization of an in-situ flushing of the pollutants by introducing washing solutions, in combination with a subsequent hydrodechlorination of the pollutants present in the groundwater. The latter process is to be performed in a permeable reactive barrier filled with an adsorbent material developed from industrial, zero-valent metal residues. General objective of the presented work consists in the development of a cost-effective remediation methodology for PCB-contaminated sites, based on an in-situ washing of the vadose zone of the soil and the reactive dechlorination of the pollutants in a reactive wall, utilizing metal scrap from industrial activities as reactive adsorbent for their dehalogenation in passive hydraulic systems.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation.
