Modelling and nonlinear control of anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural waste

Although known since long, anaerobic practice still presents some problems, due to the high sensitivity of the process to operating conditions.

There is a clear need of a global stabilization and optimization of the process, which can be reached amongst others through an appropriate control system. In order to assess the performance of a control system with a limited set of experiments, it is possible to develop a model based process simulator, on which the potential regulating techniques can be inexpensively tested.
The very detailed model proposed by Batstone et al. (ADM1) is used to simulate an anaerobic digestion process of two agricultural substrates, manure and corn silage. The simulation is able to reproduce literature data and the characteristic dynamics of the process, including the buffer capacity of ammonia and its positive effects on the stability of the process. The model can be used as a virtual laboratory platform (so-called test-problem) in order to design and evaluate the performance of control systems.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
