Environmental impacts from farming can be considered on a spectrum that stretches from intensive production systems with significant environmental pressures, to extensive farming approaches with a considerably lower environmental impact (European Communities, 2008). Livestock is associated with both ends of this farming spectrum and intensive livestock farming often results in harmful environmental impacts. These problems can be exacerbated where they coincide with weaker policy standards and poor waste management procedures. Water pollution is a common problem associated with intensive livestock production, as is biodiversity loss and the prevalence of hot spots of nutrient loading. Furthermore, livestock are responsible for substantial amounts of gaseous emissions, with 94% of total EU-15 ammonia emissions and about 50% of total methane emissions being linked to animal husbandry. Many calculations and exercises in the EU and elsewhere have shown that the capture of and energy recovery from bio-methane may considerably contribute to GHG emission reductions in particular if used as a biofuel (e.g. Tilche and Galatola, 2008). Their results also show that its use as a biofuel may allow for true negative GHG emissions, showing a net advantage with respect to other biofuels. Considering also energy crops that will become available in the next few years as a result of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, the potential for biogas production from the agricultural sector seems truly promising, whereas after considering the achievable GHG reductions, a very large carbon emission trading 'value†could support the investment needs.

Die innerstaatliche Umsetzung des Pariser Klimaschutzübereinkommens
- ein Rechtsvergleich

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
