Cellulose derived biofuels

The EU Biofuel directive created economic incentives to launch biofuels for the Member States of the European Union.

First generation biofuels, like biodiesel made of rapeseed-oil and bioethanol from grain and sugar crops are already produced in increasing quantities. Lignocellulosic biomass, which is available in large quantities, is an alternative resource for multifold novel biofuels. Currently it is difficult to estimate the economic and ecological impact of those biofuels of the second generation as the production processes are still in test stage. Anyhow it has to be expected that in the next decades the biofuels of the second generation will contribute a relevant amount of the renewable energy supply.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
