Characterization and treatment of waste combustion residues

The present paper will give an overview of the main characteristics of waste combustion residues and will provide an outlook of the principles that should be applied for the selection of the appropriate management strategies for this type of wastes.

It will be emphasized  that deep knowledge and understanding of the material’s properties are required to identify environmentally sustainable approaches for waste combustion residues, and that further studies are needed to clarify several aspects related to such materials, including modeling of chemical and mineralogical transformations and long-term leaching behavior, identification of quality standards for utilization, as well as development of suitable and reliable treatment sequences for the different types of waste combustion residues.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
